Mike Okeowo: The 'Last day pranks' were acts of passive resistance to the regime

How far do you agree? Using sources 1, 2, 3 and your own knowledge.

Source 1 - Mr. Morris, 2012, “Ties, top buttons and disclipine”

The pranks were a disgrace to the school, dissent and opposition to the school needed to be rooted out. Many of the conspirators were re-offenders notably…

Romeo done,

Today I finished school.

I don’t really know how to feel - for me, I don’t think it’s really hit me that I’m never properly going to school again because I’ve still got 3 exams and book return (looking forward to this so much). But I still feel like I must comment.

It won’t be a philosophical comment, e.g. ‘Does one ever truly leave school’ but I will reflect.

School often seemed to have its priorities wrong. Sometimes, my school seemed kind of disorganised, chaotic (ironically linked to the chaotic nature of the Nazi state of which the parallels with my school are endless) and overly concerned with its reputation. But overall, seven years there I think has fundamentally made me into a better human being with a better understanding of life (at this present moment anyway, I guess things change).

I will be forever in debt to my school and teachers within it for making me who I am today and probably for a long time, I don’t know what sort of person I’d be without it, I think they have instilled very sound values..

Of course, it’s important to not confuse the fact that is often friends, relatives and general social experience also play a role in shaping a person (nature/nurture, IDA psychology lards), but I think I can safely say the school has been a big part of it and if it hasn’t, it’s put me in the situation where I have found the people who have.

For anyone thinking of going to school, I thoroughly recommend it - despite my obvious bias (consider the provenance/context everyone) of this post in just finishing my last day, it was some experience and I have met some people who I think will genuinely influence my behaviour for years to come because of their impact on me. I mean, I guess if I read this in five or ten years, I may come to regret this conclusion, but right now I feel certain this will be the case.

This post needs to mention exams. Whatever happens in the exams I know they have given the right amount of help and intervention, as well as letting people do their own independent work. I’d say my school in particular, despite sometimes being guilty of ‘mark scheme teaching’ (i.e. teaching people how to pass exams), especially in GCSE, definitely get the balance right on having teachers who are genuinely interested and knowledgeable in their fields, as well as instilling skills to pass exams. I know I have had it particularly good in the way I have had teachers who have this balance exactly right, but on the whole, from my experience I think they have.

I don’t really know how to end this, but I will miss the routine of school the most - we, like the librarian (mmm) will be let out into the wild and the paternalistic nature of the school (conservatives: get inside me), and be out on our asses. I don’t know exactly if I’ve been taught the true nature of the ‘outside’ world by the school, I can’t tell you that, but my money is on it being the case and me being allllllrighttt.

“it’s the people you know you prolly aren’t going to see again” has been said so many times again, but it’s true. Those people that you so quickly take for granted while you’re there but I think I’ll miss a lot, for I know my friend-friends will be people I still see if I want to (I’m sure I will).

We make Plans for good times (Plans) and I hope I can actually go ahead and do them. Lethargy and apathy are not feelings I want to experience upon leaving school, I hope friendships do not become feigned or forced, or that what I feel right now is merely post-leaver’s day optimism (I stay in contact properly with nobody from my Primary school, but saying that I didn’t feel the same then) as those older than me are probably thinking (if they are reading this, I’ll stay modest), and I hope the people I have become close to at this school are people I stay in contact with for a long time to come.

Thank you school - Sidd
